Welcome to the first edition of ESL International's newsletter. Thank you to everyone for your enthusiasm and support for this newsletter, and I appreciate all the help the ESL International members have contributed to making this happen. This newsletter is for every ESL professional who has had to sort through countless web sites, blogs, and job sites seeking more information on the ESL industry.

I am sure all of us have suffered from an information overload on the internet, yet a wealth of knowledge is right in front of us in this community we share here on LinkedIn. ESL International has over 1,900 members from all over the world, and from all different kinds of backgrounds.

This newsletter is dedicated to sharing our wealth of knowledge with each other, and adding some real value to our community of ESL professionals. To discuss any of the articles, please start a discussion on the ESL International Discussion board or simply reply to the discussion automatically started for the newsletter in general. Your feedback and comments are greatly appreciated, and I encourage you all to contribute in anyway you can. I know we all have something to offer, so here's your chance to voice your opinions, experiences, and knowledge for the benefit of others: take advantage of it.

I hope you all enjoy this newsletter, and I look forward to it's impact on the ESL world. I have to say, as the one who gets to see all the content for this newsletter, there are a lot of great services, exercises, software, etc. within our community that I never knew existed, and am happy to share it with all of you.

As a side note. Web Design is not my expertise, so please excuse the "not so fancy" design of this newsletter. Hopefully as time goes on, I will be able to spruce it up a bit, but fear not, because the content is AMAZING!!

Thank you,

Brian Correia
Owner - ESL International

Comments/Questions: If you want to be featured in this newsletter, contribute an article, submit a teacher tip, have a suggestion, or want help out with the newsletter in any other way, please send me an email to correia.brian@gmail.com. I am always looking for new content, and would greatly appreciate any knowledge, tips, or information you'd like to share with the group.

English Café

This month our featured member is English Café!

English Café is a great new web site that is dedicated to providing a community atmosphere for English teachers and learners.  Not only does it provide a place for learners and teachers to connect and share lessons, photos, audios, and classes, but it also provides each and every user with some amazing e-learning tools including:

  1. Your very own blog for both teachers and learners.  Teachers can blog about any topic of their choosing and can even turn it into a lesson for their students.  Students also have the chance to write their own blogs to practice their English, or as an assignment from a teacher.
  2. EC Toolbox – Patent-Pending Suggestion Tool allows teachers to correct and comment on learners' written work they post to English Café.  It also allows you to translate and hear sections of text.
  3. Multimedia Library  including photos, audio, files, videos, etc.  English Café allows users to upload their own materials to include in their lessons, blogs, quizzes,or just to share with other users.
  4. EC Recorder – this online software that is available to all users allows you to record either audio or video directly to the English Café site using your microphone or webcam.
  5. Lesson Builder – You can create your own lessons to share with other English Café users directly on the web site.  The lessons can include any of the materials from your multimedia library, and are automatically archived for both your own convenience as well as the users.
  6. Quiz Creator – Each lesson is followed by a quiz to help students test their newfound knowledge, and English Café provides a great online tool to help you create that quiz  in to time at all.  It even includes automatic scoring, multiple choice answers, and you can even imbed audio, video, and photos.
  7. Groups – Join a group that suits your interests to be able to interact with like-minded people.  This can be a great way for learners to practice their English on a topic that’s interesting to them.  Alternatively, it is a great way for teachers to choose a topic that will keep the learners’ interest without having to rack your brain for ideas.
  8. Calendar – Schedule one on one sessions with students or an online class with multiple students.  English Café even integrates with Skype and Dimdim to effectively communicate with your students.

These are only some of the amazing features English Café provides to its users, but there are many more.  I am very happy to be featuring English Café in our first edition of ESL International’s newsletter, and encourage each and every one of you to register today.

Within a few months, English Café will enable payment support, so you can earn money for your lessons.

ESL/EFL/EFT, What REALLY WORKS!
IT’S NOT ABOUT THEORIES

by Arthur Rubin, MSW

So many theories. So little time.

Are you familiar with current ESL/EFL theories that proponents proclaim, “x made (will make) THE difference in my/your professional success, and/or the success of my/your ESL/EFL students?”

Search the web for ESL, EFL or EFT, and you’ll find an almost endless variety of such statements, as well as descriptions of the theories that trigger them. The same is true for many of the ESL, EFL, EFT, and English professional journals, blogs, newsletters, LinkedIn commentaries, etc.

If you go to a conference, training session, staff development presentation, or, in many cases, a SIG meeting, you may hear monologues propounding one or more such theories, or you may engage in a discussion about one of them, with the suggestion that it is the necessary tool you need to meet your professional teaching obligations.

Wherever I turn, whatever I click on, whenever I flip a page I see an argument (pro or con) or an explanation (in favor or against), or an article, description, or blog that takes sides.  My guess is that you having similar experiences.

What I haven’t found (yet?) is a well thought out and researched piece that OBJECTIVELY compares and contrasts a theory’s or multiple theories’, methods, successes AND failures in a comprehensive manner.

Teaching Abroad: What it's like to teach in São Paulo, Brazil
Willy C. Cardoso

Since I was born people say ‘Brazil is the country of the future’, and all I could see until a while ago was: warm weather, friendly people, amazing food, lots of holidays, football and Carnival; - nothing ‘of the future’ about it, even though I might have already persuaded half the readers to at least spend a couple of weeks here. For those of you who need more than that, let’s get back to the saying quoted above. Recently, Brazil has been trendy and looked up to in the global economy, it was one of the last countries to suffer from the latest economic turmoil and one of the first ones overcome it. The country has really developed a lot in many ways, and São Paulo being the economic center, is not far behind megacities like, New York, London, Tokyo or Beijing, especially in terms of opportunities.

Teaching English
In São Paulo you can find an English language school on every corner, it’s not hard at all for a native-speaker, for instance, to get a teaching job. There are two key points for this being an easy task, both of which I’ll then point out as actual drawbacks.

  1. It is extremely difficult to be sponsored to get a work visa in Brazil. However, there are no laws or policies controlling privately owned language institutes as regards their teachers’ visa status in the country. i.e. You can come in as a tourist, and then – presto - you can get a job!
  2. Most schools don’t require qualifications such as, CELTA or Trinity. In fact, many of them don’t even know there are such qualifications, and then again – shazaam - you can get a job, easily!

Good, piece of cake, right?

Wrong – these are dead-end jobs. continue reading

Teacher Tip:

One of my favorite warm-up activities is using anagrams. I will use them either to introduce some new vocabulary or to practice vocabulary my students have recently learned. Alternatively, it is a great way to transition into the topic of the day. The students always like it, and it is a great way to get them to start thinking in English before delving into the lesson. Don't worry if some of the words are new or very challenging, the point here is they will be thinking in English, and the words be relevant to the students. Here's one example you can take to the classroom for the topic of travel.

1. gugalge
2. kittec
3. icesatus
4. iyarntire
5. tpir

See if you can guess the words yourself, or click here to check your answers.
